October Update

By Josh Klein.

Save the Date: Mark your calendars! The first Holiday fundraising Soiree will take place on December 6th from 7-10 PM. Ticket sales begin Monday November 10th. Tesla Motors of Seattle has graciously agreed to host our event! We are currently soliciting items for a small silent auction. To contribute an item, tickets, or gift certificates, please contact myles@fieldhouseproject.org

Implementation It's my pleasure to pass along that I spent several hours today pouring over a very promising bid for the construction project. The Cedi, the formerly official, but still widely used, currency of Ghana  has weakened against the US dollar over the past twelve months. As a result your donations are going further. Preparations to break ground are well underway.\

Ebola Outbreak: Although the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa is being felt around the world, we were glad to learn that Nigeria is officially free of the virus. The Ivory Coast, Ghana's immediate neighbor, has avoided the disease thus far. While this terrible crisis is far from over, we are going to keep moving with plans to initiate work on the ground before the end of 2014.

Crowd funding: This month we were able to use humor to raise money. Spencer and I launched an unconventional crowd funding campaign. We reached a different set of donors and raised $450 in the first 15 days of a month long campaign. We quickly accumulated 3,000 views online which earned us 30 seconds of fame on the syndicated television show called Right This Minute.

Research: November marks the end of a six month long research project in the Nyanyano community. In partnership with the Danish Youth Council, Cheerful Hearts conducted an extensive survey to better understand child labor practices and attitudes towards education. Board member Zynovia Hetherington had a chance to assess and help the study during her visit in July. We'll be publishing findings next month.
